CommentsGreat Bowden village. Great Bowden Village. The gift of the association. Inscription at end of trough ""Mrs A Severn-Smith 1937". The couple who were instrumental in having the cattle trough erected were Mr and Mrs Severn-Smith. They lived in the village, Mrs Severn Smith was president of the Tennis Club and Mr Severn Smith, a retired bank manager, was chief ARP Warden during WWII. The trough was erected after the village pond on Pond Green by the Forge was filled in after the MH District Council ordered the Gunnsbrook, which flowed through the pond, to be culverted in 1928 giving the cattle, who were walked through the village, nowhere to drink on their way to market. Since the cattle are no longer walked through the village the Garden Society keeps the trough looking good with planted flowers. The trough is on the Leicestershire Historic Environment Record, number 14917.
